THE HOTEL: Hotel Baltimore, 88 bis, avenue Kleber. 75116 Paris, France. This elegant
four-star corner property is superbly situated within short walking distance of the Champs-Elysses and the Arc de Triomphe. It belongs to Accor’s new label MGallery which is a collection of top-end hotels unique for their history, location, design or character. The Baltimore meets all these criteria and with just 103 rooms, the property retains the feel of a private house complete with beautiful art work and comfortable furniture.
CHECK-IN: Immediate formal check-in at reception where two uniformed staff welcomed me in English (is it that obvious?!)
THE ROOM: Quite a small room reflecting the property’s history as a former private residence. Surprisingly funky red and brown décor with tortoiseshell-design carpet. Modern furniture and fittings and a small balcony overlooking a quiet side-street. There was a Molongo coffee-maker but no tea-making facilities. The mini bar was in the cupboard along with a safe plus a large hideaway television and wifi facilities. Bathroom toiletries by Anne Semonin.
THE BUSINESS: There was wifi throughout the hotel and four small meeting rooms on the lower floor. The boardroom was suitable for more formal meetings and a private dining room. The hotel offers private indoor parking and its central location is a major plus factor for the business traveller. Easy access from Eurostar Gare du Nord using the Paris metro to the Boissiere, stop directly opposite the hotel.
THE FACILITIES: This contemporary design hotel is well suited to ad hoc meetings in its library or bar. The lobby is modern and stylish featuring a very eclectic mix of paintings and sculptures, fresh flowers and a library area. There is an intimate bar adjoining the reception and a fitness room on the lower floor but this not the place to expect your own personal trainer.
THE RESTAURANT: The wood-panelled Table restaurant offers self-service breakfast with plenty of hot options to order. Evening dining options include French cuisine offered through the week but not Saturdays, Sundays or Bank Holidays.
THE VERDICT: A very stylish hotel with facilities to match but a bit impersonal. Good place to mix business with leisure.
THE DETAILS: Rack rates start at around £195 for a single and plenty of special offers to attract the non-Euro visitor. Tel: +33 1/44 34 54 54; see: www.accorhotels.com Jo Austin
