Holiday Inn, Reading South

The hotel: Holiday Inn Reading South. Recently refurbished, the property features 165 single and 37 double rooms.

The location: Good position around five minutes from Junction 11 of the M4. The hotel was well signposted and easily found despite being off the main thoroughfare.

The check-in: Three courteous staff members were behind the desk, one of whom checked us in and advised us of the hotel's facilities. Upon reaching the room we were called to check everything was ok.

The room: An Executive Suite with double bed and bathroom with bath and shower. The room was light and had a desk, internet connection, TV, minibar, safe, dressing gowns and slippers, magazines and ample wardrobe and drawer space. Toiletries were provided in the bathroom, and there was also an iron, ironing board, trouser press and hair dryer.

The business: Wifi internet access is available throughout the hotel for an additional charge. The hotel has 11 meetings rooms, with the largest able to accommodate 120 guests in reception style.

The restaurant: Located on the ground floor, the Traders Restaurant served a variety of international dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There’s also an Irish-themed pub, though it's closed on Sundays.

The facilities: There's an on-site health and fitness club with heated pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and numerous exercise machines. There's an ATM machine in reception and parking is free – as are newspapers.

The CHECKOUT: A swift and simple check-out, and back on the motorway in minutes.

The verdict: A very convenient place to stay for anyone using the busy M4 corridor. The staff were most welcoming and, as it's a low-rise building, there's quick access to rooms with no waiting around for elevators.

The details: Prices start from £45 for one night's B&B in a double room. See www.holidayinn.co.uk, or tel: 0870 400 9670.
