The flight: easyJet flight 703 from London Gatwick to Edinburgh. Departing 09.50 arriving 11.15; seat configuration 3x3.

The check-in: A number of check-in desks were open for the various easyJet departures, hardly any of which had customers at them. An amusing tussle between the staff at neighbouring desks ensued about which of them was going to check our group of four in; ultimately we split into two and were quickly dealt with. Security was similarly quiet and we were airside within five minutes.

The boarding process: As is common with Gatwick, it was around a ten minute walk to the gate, where the usual boarding melee was taking shape. Our relatively early arrival at check-in meant we were in the second boarding group, preceeded only by those who had opted to pay extra for 'speedy boarding', although it seemed the system wasn't strictly enforced.

The seat: The familiar bright upholstery was in good condition and the seat was comfortable enough for the short flight.

The service: The inflight magazine was well designed and full of very readable content, while a trolley service offered the usual expensive menu of snacks and drinks.

The arrival: Arrived slightly ahead of schedule and were off the aircraft and into the arrivals hall within ten minutes. There was a further ten minute wait for the luggage belt to grind into action.

The verdict: What you pay for is what you get! Cheap fares, no frills, an efficient end-to-end service and a raucous hen party indulging early in the day!

The details: Now bookable through the GDS. Book in advance for cheaper fares; additional charges for Speedy Boarding, Speedy Boarding Plus, lounge access and checking in luggage. www.easyJet.com
