THE flight: Oman Air flight WY102 to Muscat, Oman, departing London Heathrow Terminal 3 at 22.35 on one of the airline’s three Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
The check-in: There were no queues at the economy class check-in, and this being an off-peak flight, a number of security desks were free, making for a quick stroll through to the departures lounge.
The boarding process: With the economy class cabin one-third full, boarding was quick and hassle-free. Daily newspapers were available at the cabin entrance, and hot towels, amenity kits, a menu card and headphones were distributed by the smart and friendly cabin crew soon after I took my seat. The safety briefing was both manual and on the 10.6 inch seat-back video screens, in English and Arabic.
The seat: The 196 economy class seats are configured 2x4x2, and with a pitch of 34 inches - compared to the usual 32 inches - gave a feeling of space and comfort.
The service: The drinks trolley turned up soon after take-off, serving alcohol and soft drinks, plus savoury biscuits. Supper comprised a starter, pudding and a choice of three main courses, my beef and olive ragout, accompanied by a selection of wines, proving excellent. Light refreshments were offered an hour or so before landing. The biggest bonus for many travellers, however, is that in March 2010, Oman Air became the first airline in the world to offer in-flight mobile phone and wifi connectivity. Installed in all three classes, it allows passengers to make voice calls, send text messages, check emails and access the internet.
The arrival: Touchdown was 30 minutes ahead of schedule, and the progression through immigration, the visa-on-arrival desk (OM 20/£32 for one month’s stay), and the luggage hall equally speedy.
The verdict: Travelling overnight in a comfortable environment with attentive staff meant I arrived in good shape to start a day’s work. And with wifi connectivity, I was able to switch between working on the laptop, snoozing and enjoying the entertainment system.
