Malaysia Airlines

The Flight: Malaysia Airlines MH3 from London Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur, travelling Golden Club Class (on a Boeing 747-400) on the upper deck with a 2x2 configuration.

The Check-in: There was no queue at the Golden Club Class check-in at Terminal 3, and check-in was super swift.

The lounge: The Golden Lounge at Heathrow features a fountain, bar with waiter service, a business centre, good choice of food – including Western and Eastern breakfasts – and a huge choice of newspapers and magazines.

The Seat: The upholstery and carpet were dark blue, with light blue trim, in an off-white cabin. The Golden Club Class seat has a massage facility, and several pre-set positions, including lie-flat. Pitch is 62 inches and width is 18.5 inches. There is a thick, duvet-like blanket. The selection of films kept me well entertained while I wasn't sleeping.

The Service: The smiling stewardesses were in traditional dress: a long, tight-fitting sarong with a kebaya top, in a turquoise floral design. The welcome drink was mango, orange or guava juice. Champagne and a good selection of Burgundy and Australian wine followed. The meal began with the signature satay dish, plus warm, fresh bread. A prawn starter was followed by a baked salmon main – too much food if you enjoyed the satay! Nice touches: a blue napkin with a buttonhole in the corner to save your shirtfront, and big mugs for the excellent tea. Breakfast was either scrambled egg, Chinese noodles or a traditional Malaysian dish.

The Arrival: The landing was smooth at the end of the 12-hour flight, and the transfer desk at the beautiful, modern KL airport handled my transit efficiently. I spent an hour in the excellent, spacious Golden Club Lounge, complete with putting room, massage room, Santai spa, and a good selection of food and drink, before flying on to Sydney.

The Verdict: A very good long-haul flight, with comfortable seat, excellent service with a smile from the world's best cabin crew, but almost too much food to appreciate. The lounges are also top-class.

The Details: Malaysia Airlines flies from LHR to Kuala Lumpur daily. Price currently advertised is £699 return in economy, with Golden Club (business class) from £2,400, including taxes. www.malaysiaairlines.com
